Elegant and cheerful little Terrier is well balanced and has harmonious constitution. The coat can be of three types: cracked, tough and smooth, color usually white with reddish-brown or black spots. As regards growth there are two types: 23-30,5 and 30,5-38 cm. The weight 5,5-8,5 kg. Chest is not too broad, as befits a dog running in a fox hole. The body is elongated a little bit. The tail is usually docked, docked tail of adult dogs is around 10 cm. Ears are hanging, in the form of the Latin letter V, hanging on the cartilage. The muzzle is long and rather tapering.

The head is with a strong skull and jaws, correct bite and a pronounced relief muscled cheeks. Almond-shaped eyes, small ears in the form of a hanging triangle tightly to the head. The first who brought his line of wire-haired terrier, which hunted with a pack of hounds, got into a hole and drove out the foxes, was an amateur hunter, a priest from Devonshire Jack Russell more than 100 years ago. He was moreover an expert on the Terriers at the exhibitions in the West England and one of the first founders of the English Kennel Club. Reverend Jack Russell wanted to breed an ideal terrier, of a suitable size for catching a fox, but not too small, able to keep up with the hounds chasing an animal. It is possible that Russell used low-leg Terriers, but on the whole, the history of breeding remained his secret. It is believed that in creating this brave rat catcher and hunter some terrier blood was mixed with bull terriers and pocket beagles' blood. Modern type of Jack Russell Terrier is more graceful than rude style of the past. Old-style Jack Russell Terrier was characterized by more gross bone and stocky constitution.
